Monoethanolamine(MEA CAS#141-43-5) belongs to the class of ethanol amines, with both primary amine and hydroxyl functionality. MEA is used as a building block, ph-control agent as well as a dilution agent. MEA is used as a pH control agent in the formulation of packaging and printing inks. MEA combine the properties of amines and alcohols in one molecule. They exhibit the unique capability of undergoing reactions common to both groups (bifunctional). As amines, they are mildly alkaline and react with acids to form salts or soaps. As alcohols they can be transformed to ethers and esters. MEA are miscible with water, most alcohols and polyols. Most of their industrial applications are dependent to some degree on these features. Applications include the production of wood-treatment chemicals, detergents and surfactants.

Monoethanolamine is an important corrosion inhibitor,which plays an inhibition role in boiler water treatment,automotive engine coolant,drilling and cutting oil and other kinds of lubricating oils. However,monoethanolamine should not be used in combination with nitrite corrosion inhibitors to prevent the formation of nitrosamine carcinogens.
It is used as chemical reagent, pesticide,medicine,solvent,dye intermediate,rubber accelerator,corrosion inhibitor,surfactant,etc. It is also used as acid gas absorbent,emulsifier,plasticizer,rubber vulcanizer,printing and dyeing brightener,fabric moth repellent,etc. It can also be used as plasticizer,vulcanizer,accelerator and foaming agent of synthetic resin and rubber,as well as intermediate of pesticide,medicine and dye.It is also the raw material of synthetic detergent,cosmetics emulsifier,etc.Textile industry is used as printing and dyeing brightener,antistatic agent,moth proofing agent and detergent.It can also be used as carbon dioxide absorbent,ink additive and petroleum additive.
